Library of the Superintendence of Archaeological Heritage of Umbria

The library was created in 1964 along with the establishment of the Superintendence of Antiquity of Umbria.
The library had an original core of five thousand volumes, inherited from civic museums and the Bellucci collection, later transferred to the Archaeological Museum in the 1950s, when it became state-owned. The Institute’s activities then made it necessary to acquire additional specialized bibliographic instruments.
Following the creation of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage, the library grew with the addition of gifts from the Ministry, acquisitions and exchanges with other institutes. Currently the library has 15,000 volumes, including various periodicals, centered on various topics of archeology.
Particularly valuable is the library’s ethno-anthropologic section, consisting of rare editions from the 19th and early 20th century, assembled by Giuseppe Bellucci.
Over the years the library has taken on its own independent role, serving as a second pole of specialist consultation in the region. It draws a steady number of students, scholars, teachers, tourists and everyday citizens, despite its cramped space and limited hours.
